Yoga Energetics | Samana

Samana is the energy of balancing. It is also associated with integrating and equalizing.

When samana is healthy, we stay in balance.  We know when to inhale and when to exhale. We know what to keep and what to let go. 

When samana is weak, we struggle with assimilating and digesting not only the food we consume but also our mental and emotional experiences.  In many ways, samana is the wisdom to "accept the things we cannot change and change the things we can."

The energy of samana is focused at the navel center, and while twists help strengthen samana, in many ways the energy is subtle and is affected by the breath.

Imagine your inhale bringing in energy (prana) into your lungs and all the way to your belly. Now, drawing your navel back, imagine that your exhale is clearing out everything you don't need.  As the inhale and exhale touch for a moment behind the navel, imagine that your own internal fire is stoked--a warmth that keeps you centered.

This week, our intention is to become aware of this energy within in us.  Not to shape it in any way, but simply to observe if samana in us is strong or weak.  How balanced are we?
